Pacific islands
The context
Akuo is a central operator in the Pacific region. Thanks to a strong track record and valuable expertise on islands and remote areas, Akuo is well-positioned to develop, finance, build and operate fully integrated, high-quality solar, wind and storage projects in the region. Akuo has teams present in New Caledonia, French Polynesia, Kingdom of Tonga, New Zealand and Australia, which provide in-house support along the whole value chain of renewable energy projects.
French Polynesia
French Polynesia is the most recent tropical archipelago on which our teams have introduced our innovative concepts aimed at island nations. It is a natural setting that is both welcoming and particularly demanding from a visual perspective for our agrivoltaic farms combining renewable energy production and local farming production, given the beauty of the sites on which our projects are integrated and the lack of available land on these various islands.
Initiated in 2019, our approach in terms of sensitizing local players and seeking partners materialized in 2020 and 2021, when we successfully won three communal tenders in the Leeward Islands, each time providing opportunities for projects organized in the form of cyclone-proof agrisolar greenhouses. This concept provides a perfect answer to communities’ expectations regarding the challenges they are exposed to.
But beyond these initial successes, the Akuo teams’ contribution in French Polynesia was to demonstrate the relevance and sturdiness of renewable solutions scaled to these small autonomous power grids, truly launching the archipelago’s energy transition.
On two of these three solar farms, Akuo made the combination of renewable production means and appropriate storage solutions both possible and credible in order to provide these island networks with stability and services when intermittent renewable energy sources are introduced. Akuo is particularly proud to be able to play this recognized role of a pioneer and precursor in winning people over to French Polynesia’s sustainable development challenges.
Kingdom of Tonga
Akuo's journey in the Pacific region continues in the Kingdom of Tonga. Akuo designed and built the storage installations necessary to provide the necessary support to the grid, in order to increase the renewable energy penetration.
In 2021, Akuo successfully commissioned two large scale Battery Energy Storage Systems:
- Tonga Renewable Energy Program 1, a battery for frequency regulation, of 5 MWh / 10 MW and
- Tonga Renewable Energy Program 2, a battery for load shifting, of 23 MWh / 7 MW.
That’s the very purpose of Akuo Pacific Teams: to develop and to implement tailor-made solutions with meaningful impacts targeted at territories impacted the most by climate change.
